10/06/08 Thousands of éirígí ‘No To Lisbon’ leaflets were distributed at Croke Park on Sunday (8 June) as part of éirígí’s ongoing campaign for a NO vote at the Lisbon referendum on Thursday, June 12.
Leaflets were distributed by éirígí activists and supporters inside and outside the ground, to a welcoming and supportive crowd. Spectators also were privy to banners and a visual display canvassing for a no vote. Daithí Mac an Mhaistír – éirígí spokesperson, speaking from the ground praised the positive response and asked activists to continue to drive the message home of how important a no vote is for the future of Ireland and Europe. “The feeling here today reflects what we have seen throughout the run up to this referendum – that once the realities of the Lisbon Treaty are exposed it becomes anathema to the people of Ireland. “We can defeat this thing and with continued drive and determination by éirígí and countless others we will. However we cannot let up for a second as the entire apparatus of the state and its media moguls are being thrown behind the yes campaign. They will threaten and lie until the day of the referendum and we and others like us will act as the counterbalance during that time.
“If the response here at Croke Park today is anything to go on, the public are preparing to decimate this treaty at the polls. We in éirígí encourage every Irish citizen able to vote, to do so, and to vote ‘No’. “It is left up top those within the electoral boundaries of the Twenty-Six counties to come out on Thursday and deny the architects of this treaty, on behalf of our fellow citizens in Ireland and our fellow Europeans who have been denied a say on this crucial and profoundly controversial issue.”
