Ireland can send two sets of warmongers packing

10/06/08

With the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty on Thursday, just a few days before George Bush and Gordon Brown’s visit to Ireland, there is a unique opportunity for Irish citizens to send international warmongers a clear and strong message that their military pursuits are not in our name.

Uncle EU wants youWhile people in the Six Counties will send a clear message through public protest that Brown and Bush are not welcome in our country, the people of the Twenty-Six counties will have an opportunity to send an unequivocal message across Europe that militarisation and war will not be carried out by Europe with the endorsement of the Irish people.

Daithí Mac An Mhaistír, éirígí Spokesperson, outlined why people should vote No to the treaty and urged people to ensure that Ireland doesn’t become part of a European military machine controlled by a rich, greedy and power hungry minority.

“When those in favour ask you to vote YES on the Lisbon treaty they are asking the Irish people to approve a more militarised Europe, a common European defence policy, and a de facto European army with a role in International wars.

“Major elements of the Treaty are designed to create the structures and authority to mirror the US's disastrous and illegal ‘war on terror' which has brought untold misery to the lives of countless millions.

He continued:

“The Treaty binds Europe to increase its military spending, expand its military capabilities and authorises the EU to corporately move from so-called peacekeeping roles to all out military conflict.

“The Treaty binds states to coordinating their military forces and making both civilian and military capabilities available to implement ‘European Defence policy’ – as decided and defined by an unaccountable few in Brussels.

United States of Europe? No thanks!

“On June 12, people can send a clear message that this is unacceptable, that we will not approve any Treaty or initiative that creates a Europe based on military capacity and enforcing the will of greedy politicians and bureaucrats through an EU army.

“That Ireland will not be part of endorsing a US style invading army. That Ireland wants a Europe, which seeks to be a force for peace and justice and not a force for war and oppression.

“With George Bush and Gordon Brown’s visit to Ireland just a few days after the Treaty referendum, Irish people can see the personification of where militarism will lead and the misery it will cause.

“When people in the Six Counties next week take to the streets to say No to these tyrants, those in The Twenty Six counties have a chance to say no to following in their footsteps by voting against the Lisbon treaty and the militarisation of Europe.

“Ireland must say ‘No’ to their war.
No to Brown. No to Bush. No to Lisbon.”
