éirígí's Daithí Mac an Mháistír addresses the CAEUC launchIn recent days éirígí has continued to support events and campaigns against the proposed Lisbon Treaty across Ireland.

On Tuesday, May 21, éirígí spokesperson Daithí Mac an Mháistír contributed to a Q&A session with journalists at the formal launch of the Campaign Against the EU Constitution (CAEUC) which was held at the Unite-TGWU offices in Dublin before travelling to Donegal to promote éirígí’s Vote No to Lisbon campaign.

The CAEUC, of which éirígí is a member, is campaigning for a no vote in the June 12 Twenty-Six county referendum. It is a broad coalition of political parties, organizations, trade unionists and individuals committed to democracy, peace, justice, Irish neutrality and equality.

Speaking after the events Daithí said:

“As we move closer to the date of the referendum we have seen a heartening and much needed increase in campaigning activity against the Lisbon treaty. At the official launch of the CAEUC campaign it was encouraging to see such a wide range of progressive and left voices working on a coordinated campaign against the Treaty.

“The CAEUC launch covered some of the wide range of reasons to vote ‘No’ to the treaty from the erosion of workers rights to the loss of vetoes in areas including health and education, to militarisation and the removal of democratic accountability.

“Later the meeting in Donegal emphasised how these concerns are shared by people the length and breadth of Ireland.

Some of the panel in Dublin“With the referendum only a few weeks away I would appeal to people to inform themselves of the true consequences of this Treaty and the real and lasting damage it will cause to Ireland.

“éirígí is committed to exposing the truth behind the Lisbon Treaty and will continue to work with all those who share our concerns in pursuit of a resounding No vote.

“We will be involved in further public events up until the day of the referendum and we encourage everyone to resist the implementation of this debilitating and disempowering piece of European legislation, by simply voting No on June 12.

“We also encourage people to organise in other ways through letter writing campaigns and within your unions and workplaces generally to encourage an awareness of the reality of this treaty, which the Irish and British governments are hiding from the citizens of this country.

“Furthermore people should lobby politicians, particularly in the Six Counties where there will be no referendum, as the British government will pass this legislation without consultation with the citizens of the northeast.

“The CAEUC will be involved in awareness raising in Belfast on the issue in the coming weeks and I encourage people to come along to the meeting we have organised for June 9th at 7pm in the Conway Mill, West Belfast to find out how it will affect the 1.8 million Irish citizens living under British Rule.”

All details of further events will be advertised on this site in advance. Keep logging on to find out more.
