Ballinteer Hosts Successful UP Housing Campaign Launch

Dozens of people attended the South Dublin launch of Éirígí’s UP Housing campaign on Tuesday, October 15th. The event took place in The Coach House in the suburb of Ballinteer in the foothills of the Dublin mountains.

Local resident and Cathaoirleach Éirígí Brian Leeson delivered a thirty minute UP Housing presentation which explained what UP Housing is and how it would provide affordable, secure homes for all and transform Irish society in the process.

Following the presentation the event was opened to the floor for questions, feedback and general commentary. Speaking after the meeting Leeson said,

“We were delighted with the turnout at tonight’s launch, which contained a good mixture of women and men of all ages from the local community. It was the first occasion that we’ve had to explain UP Housing to, and get feedback from, a large group of our fellow citizens. That feedback was all positive.

Other political parties are only proposing minor tweaks to the current system of housing. Their calls for more ‘social and affordable’ housing or increased grants for first-time-buyers or tax breaks for private renters are designed to win votes not the fight for housing justice.

UP Housing would radically change the housing landscape, providing everyone who is need of housing with a viable alternative to the private rental and private purchase market. UP Housing would end the worst excesses of the current crisis within a short number of years and transform our society in the longer term.

UP Housing is also a really simple concept which people can readily understand and rally behind.

Over the coming weeks the campaign for UP Housing will continue to expand and grow. Leaflets, banners, pop-up displays, petition sheets, posters and other campaign materials printed, with more one the way. We’re also hoping to have a rolling timetable of local information / petition stalls and local campaign launches.

I would strongly encourage anyone that wants to help out with the UP Housing campaign to get in touch. No matter how little, all help is welcome. Together we can build a groundswell of support for a new approach to housing that will put the needs of families ahead of the greed of the property parasites.”
