Éirígí For A New Republic will launch its local UP Housing campaign at a public meeting in Ballinteer, South Dublin, at 7.30pm on Tuesday, October 15th. The launch will include a new UP Housing presentation that will be delivered by Brian Leeson.
Speaking from Ballinteer, Leeson said,
“Universal Public Housing is the only measure that can permanently end the housing crisis and deliver housing justice for all. The housing proposals that almost every other political party are putting forward amount to little more than tinkering around the edges of the existing deeply-flawed model of housing.
Beyond solving the housing crisis, UP Housing would transform Irish society by reducing wealth inequality and eroding class divisions. The societal impact of introducing Universal Public Housing would be on a par with the impact of the introduction of universal education in the middle of the last century.
The political establishment are opposed to the introduction of UP Housing because they know that it would unleash economic, social and political change - change that would weaken the dominance of private landowners, developers, bankers, landlords and the gombeen political class.
At the meeting on October 15th I will outline exactly what UP Housing is, how it could be rolled out, how much it would cost and how it can be paid for. It will also provide an opportunity for members of the public to ask questions and to get involved in the campaign.
The meeting is free of charge and open to all. I would strongly encourage anyone who is affected by the housing crisis come along to the meeting and hear what we have to say. That includes people who are on the housing waiting lists, people who are paying extortionate rent to private landlords and people who are stuck living in their parent’s home and unable to move on with their lives. And it also included people who are worried about the housing insecurity that is facing their children and their grandchildren.
UP Housing is the game-changer of an idea that we can all get behind to end the housing crisis for this generation and for generations to come.”
The UP Housing launch will take place in the function room of The Coach House in Ballinteer, starting at 7.30pm and finishing about 9.00pm.
