Éirígí Activists To Partake In 24-Hour Easter Sunday Fast In Aid Of Friends Of Palestinian Medical Relief Society

This Easter Sunday, Éirígí activists from Dublin and Galway will be partaking in a 24-hour fast to raise much needed funds for the Friends of Palestinian Medical Relief Society who help finance emergency medical teams in Gaza, the West Bank and East Jerusalem.

It is now six months since the Apartheid state of Israel launched their genocidal assault against the people of Gaza, with the financial, political, and military backing of the United States, Britain, and a whole clatter of European Union member states.

So far they have murdered around 35,000 people, with a further 12,000 missing under the rubble and well over 100,000 more Palestinians being maimed, with the majority of victims being women and children.  They have virtually cut-off any aid from reaching Gaza, leading to many starving to death and hundreds of thousands more facing the same fate.

Starving Palestinian children await scarce food aid in Gaza.

They have displaced nearly all of Gaza’s population, driving these people southwards through a maze of death and destruction, overlooked and periodically bombed by Israeli fighter jets and drones.  The displaced people of northern and central Gaza are now crowded into makeshift camps in Rafah, which is itself under constant bombardment from the air and it is feared will be subject to a ground invasion by Apartheid Israel.

Gaza’s medical facilities and health workers have not been spared from Apartheid Israel’s genocidal campaign, with IOF forces bombing all of the territory’s hospitals by air, along with forces on the ground laying siege to them before attacking the buildings, murdering medical staff and patients alike, and taking those left alive as hostages.

Hundreds of Gazan medical workers, volunteers of the Palestinian Red Crescent and UNRWA staff have been murdered by the forces of Apartheid Israel, but despite all this they still make the daily decision to continue their life saving work, using whatever equipment they have that has not already been destroyed in order to save the limbs and lives of their people.

Palestinian Medical Relief Society medics walk through the rubble of houses in Gaza on their way to assist those maimed by Apartheid Israel.

In the face of international inaction at this genocide taking place before our very eyes, it is imperative that the freedom loving peoples of this world stand full square behind the Palestinians!

The act of fasting is itself a symbolic act in solidarity with a people currently undergoing deliberate food deprivation by Apartheid Israel - a people who, despite this inhumane treatment, are still determined to fight for their freedom.

In Ireland, 179-years-ago, Irish people were forced to suffer a similar fate, with the British enforcing starvation on millions.  This genocidal policy claimed the lives of well over one million of our people, forcing many millions more to emigrate, and having a destructive impact on our ancient culture and our native tongue.

Éirígí For A New Republic will continue to play our part in supporting the Palestinian people and their struggle for national freedom, just as we have done for the past eighteen years!
