Build Homes! Not Hotels! Campaign Launched In Dublin
Éirígí activists in North Dublin have launched a new campaign today highlighting the oversupply of new hotel developments in local communities already suffering the effects of the worst housing crisis in a generation.
Despite hundreds of thousands of young people in these communities being denied access to secure, affordable homes, along with these areas being at the epicentre of record levels of homelessness, new hotel developments continue to pop up, making a bad situation even worse.
Speaking from East Wall, Éirígí’s representative for Dublin’s North Inner City Gareth Murray said,
“At present, Dublin is on track to see the construction of dozens of new hotel developments, with huge swathes of land located in neighbourhoods worst affected by the housing crisis being given over to international Hotel chains.”
Murray continued,
“In my community of East Wall alone there are plans for the construction of three new hotel developments, totalling hundreds of rooms, the biggest of which will be a 15-storey hotel towering over a community reeling from the impact of the worst housing crisis in generations.
The establishment parties have chosen to put the interests of a few international hotel chains ahead of the housing needs of citizens in their own Capital City. The housing needs of Irish citizens must always come before the corporate greed of international hotel chains!”
Murray concluded,
“The ‘Build Homes! Not Hotels!’ campaign is calling for all available land in our community to be used to provide local people with secure, high-quality, and affordable Universal Public Housing. Why should a small greedy few profit while the rest of us suffer?”
