These Republican Citizen Activists Are Bringing The 'Vultures Out!' Message To Their Communities - Why Not Join Them?
Earlier this month Éirígí in Dublin took delivery of 30,000 copies of a new ‘Vultures Out’ newsletter. The four-page publication, which is packed full of information about the vulture landlord takeover of Irish housing, was subsequently distributed to our Ciorcal Áitiúla (local branches) and is now being delivered door-to-door in dozens of communities by republican citizen activists.
The people of Ireland are entitled to know the full truth about the vulture landlord takeover of housing and the role that the political establishment have played in not only allowing, but actively encouraging, that takeover. Over the last five years, Éirígí activists have worked tirelessly to bring that truth to as many people as possible, both online and in the real world.
No other political party can match the research that Éirígí has done to expose the full extent of the vulture takeover of Irish housing. That cutting-edge research has established that the vulture landlords already own more than 15,000 Irish homes, that they will soon own another 10,000 new homes that are already under construction and that yet another 6,000 homes that have been granted planning permission will also end up in vulture hands. You can view the exact locations of these 31,000+ homes on Ireland’s only interactive vulture tracking map which Éirígí has built.
Éirígí has also been to the fore of advocating for Universal Public Housing - a new system of housing that would represent a fundamental break from the current system of privately-owned, profit driven housing.
The people that benefit most from the current housing system - land-speculators, developers, bankers, vulture landlords, ‘traditional’ landlords, estate agents, legal professionals and others - are among the most financially and politically powerful people in Ireland. They are not going to easily surrender a system that has gifted them vast wealth and power.
Defeating them, and the gombeen politicians that protect their interests, is going to require the emergence of a new generation of republican citizen activists who will work together within new political parties like Éirígí.
Éirígí is made up of regular women and men who want change - women and men who have had enough of a political-economic system that places the interests of the super-wealthy ahead of everyone else - women and men who believe that every citizen in a Republic should have access to housing, education, healthcare and the other essential services that are needed for them to reach their individual potential - women and men who have decided that they will no longer be passive observers to their own futures - women and men who have taken a conscious decision to become republican citizen activists.
