The official launch of the UP Housing campaign took place in Wexford Town on Tuesday (November 12th) in the Coolcotts Community Centre. The meeting was attended by citizens from the town as well as Enniscorthy, Bunclody and elsewhere.
Following an introduction by local Éirígí member Gary O’Brien, Cathaoirleach Éirígí Brian Leeson gave a presentation explaining the key elements of Universal Public Housing. There then followed commentary and questions from the floor. Speaking after the launch Gary O’Brien said,
“We’ve been distributing UP Housing leaflets in Wexford for a number of weeks now, both door-to-door and from an on-street information stall. It was clear to me from that work that people are very interested in UP Housing as an alternative to the current chaos in housing.
Brian’s presentation gave people a much deeper understanding of what UP Housing is all about, the principles that underpin it, how it would be paid for and how it would ultimately transform our society for the better. It was clear from the comments that followed that people understood and support our analysis and the visionary alternative that is UP Housing.
Over the next few days we’ll be contacting everyone that attended the campaign launch to ask them to get involved in the campaign in some way. And after that we’ll be working out a programme of leaflet distribution, information stalls, protests, direct actions, local meetings and other campaign activities for the next few months.
I’d ask anyone that’s interested in building a housing justice movement across Country Wexford to get in touch with me. Together we can challenge the domination and exploitation of the developers, bankers, landlords and their Gombeen fixers.”
