Annual Black Flag Vigil Held In Dublin
Éirígí members and supporters attended the party’s Dublin South Central Annual Black Flag Vigil to Remember The Hunger Strike of 1981.
The monumental struggle by Irish Republican Prisoners against attempts by Margaret Thatcher to criminalise the struggle for Irish liberation took place thirty five years ago and on the 3rd of October 1981 with all the demands being met but at the loss of the lives of ten brave men.
Speaking at the annual event Area Rep Damien Farrell said, “It is vitally important that we mark and remember the sacrifices made by those who gave their lives in 1981. The battle was more than a prison struggle, it was a defence of the political legitimacy of the entire struggle for a 32 County Socialist Republic. The determination of men like Bobby Sands under extreme conditions and against apparently insurmountable odds is an example that must be proudly remembered.”
Farrell concluded by thanking all those for attending and praised the support of passing pedestrians and motorists.
