Éirígí will be holding the first public launch of its UP Housing campaign on Tues, Oct 15th in Ballinteer, Dublin. The event with take place in The Coach House, beginning at 7.30pm and ending at 9.00pm.
The launch will include a presentation by party Chairperson Brian Leeson which will explain how UP Housing would end the housing crisis and transform Irish society in the process. Speaking ahead of the launch Leeson said,
"UP Housing, or Universal Public Housing, is a proposed new model of state-supplied rental housing that would be open to everyone who is need of a home, regardless of their income. It would provide a viable long-term alternative for middle income earners to both the extortionate private rental sector and the over-priced home-buyers market.
UP Housing would represent a fundamental shift in how we as a society approach the issue of housing. It would provide everyone with a legal right to access a publicly owned home, in much the same way that all children are currently entitled to access a school place.
UP Housing would bring about the end of income-segregated 'social housing', replacing communities of concentrated poverty with communities where families from a variety of income backgrounds would live side by side. It would also end the scandalous waste of public money on schemes like HAP, RAS and emergency accommodation.
The rents that would be paid under UP Housing would be truly affordable because they would be linked to the individual household income. No household would pay more than 30% of their net income on rent, the level above which rent is deemed to be unaffordable.
UP Housing residents would have full security of tenure, including inter-generational tenancies in a mature system. All UP Housing would remain in permanent public ownership to prevent a housing crisis emerging again in the future.
Over time UP Housing would be self-funded through the direct rent paid by residents and the indirect benefits to the wider economy. UP Housing is the only system that can deliver a permanent end to the housing crisis and transform Irish society in the process. People who want to find out more about UP Housing, or get involved in the campaign to make it a reality, should come along to tomorrow.”
