"All I Want For Christmas Is Universal Public Housing" Campaign Rolls Out Across Ireland
Éirígí activists have begun to roll out a snap ‘All I Want For Christmas Is Universal Public Housing’ campaign in communities across the country. The initial phase, which began this past weekend, will see leaflet distribution and information stalls in various locations including Athlone, Galway, Dundrum, East Wall, Tallaght, Kilkenny, Limerick and Mullingar.
Speaking from the Dundrum stall on Saturday, Cathaoirleach Éirígí, Brian Leeson said, “It’s now over five years since Éirígí started campaigning for the creation of a new system of Universal Public Housing.
Over that time there has been a noticeable shift in the language that other political parties are using, with everyone from Eoghan Murphy to Eoin Ó Broin now talking about building ‘public housing on public lands’.
There is, however, a world of difference between the Universal Public Housing that Éirígí is proposing and the proposals of the establishment political parties. UP Housing is not the same as social housing, cost rental housing, Part V housing or government-subsidised private purchase housing. It’s not the same as RAS or HAP or any of the numerous other models of housing that have been tried and failed in this state.
UP Housing is a radically different model of housing that would see the state directly providing housing for anyone who is need - housing where rent would be affordable because it’s linked to income - housing that would offer security of tenure, including inter-generational leases - housing that would be open to all, regardless of their income.
This model of housing can work. The state has the land, the finances, the expertise and the legal powers to make it work. The only that’s missing is the political will to make it happen. The political will for UP Housing simply does not exist in either the government or main opposition parties.
And that’s what Éirígí’s UP Housing campaign is all about - building popular support for UP Housing and putting political pressure on Fine Gael, Sinn Féin, Fianna Fail, Labour, The Greens, Social Democrats and every other party to support UP Housing as the only system that can permanently end the housing crisis and transform Irish society in the process.
I’d encourage anyone that’s serious about housing, anyone that’s serious about ending the domination of housing by private landowners, developers, landlords, estates agents, solicitors and the the other housing parasites to get in touch with Éirígí today. To join us in building a housing revolution and a New Republic.”
