Éirígí Activists Organise Clean-Up Of Royal Canal In Mullingar
Éirígí For A New Republic activists recently carried out a clean-up of a stretch of the Royal Canal in Mullingar, Co Westmeath. They did so after being contacted by local anglers, advising of an oil spill in the canal.
Upon inspection they found that council workers had already cleaned the oil spill, but that the banks were badly littered. As a result, local party members came together to clean up the worst-affected stretch of the canal.
Speaking after the clean-up, Éirígí General Secretary, Mickey Moran, said, “Éirígí places a great emphasis on the importance of the environment, from global-level climate change right down to community-level protection of the natural environment. And we also place a great emphasis on the importance of community self-reliance and solution-driven politics.
When our local activists saw the amount or rubbish that had been discarded along this section of the canal, they immediately set about planning today’s clean-up. And as a result, several bags of discarded cardboard, paper, cans, plastic and glass bottles have been collected and safely disposed of.
Today’s clean-up is just one element of a growing range of Éirígí activities in Westmeath, Roscommon and the wider midlands. From campaigning for the establishment of a new system of Universal Public Housing to organising local pop-up Gaeltachts, our local activists are challenging the failures of the political establishment, while putting forward positive, realistic solutions to those failures.
Whatever the issue is that we are campaigning on, we want to build pride and confidence in our communities through political and community activism. I’d encourage anyone in the midlands who is interested in joining or helping Éirígí to get in touch with us today.
The more people that come on board, the greater the challenge we will be able to mount to the political establishment and the status quo at both a local and national level. And the faster we will move to the New Republic that the Irish people need and deserve.”
