Enough Is Enough - Athlone Stands With Palestine!
Last Friday, the 22nd of March, Palestinian solidarity activists in Athlone held an emergency demonstration in support of the people of Palestine, with over fifty people assembling at the Athlone Brigade IRA monument in the centre of the town.
The statue, which was erected in 1953, has become a focal point for recent demonstrations in support of the people of Palestine.
Éirígí’s Midlands representative, Mickey Moran, addressed the crowd, drawing parallels between the struggle against occupation in Palestine, with the struggle against occupation in Ireland.
“In the next few days many of us here, will be attending Easter commemorations, where we will be paying tribute to the men and women of our own struggle who refused to live under occupation. It is extremely fitting that we gather at this spot, where our martyrs are remembered to express our unwavering solidarity with the Palestinian people and their hopes and dreams for a homeland free from occupation.”
The demonstration lasted for around an hour and received a huge amount of support from those passing by. This was just one of a number of protests held in Athlone over the last few months, with plans afoot to hold a meeting around the issue very soon.
